Epidural Steroid Injections – Cervical, Thoracic and Lumbar
Epidural injections are given in the epidural space surrounding your spinal
column. Injections can be given in the lumbar region (the lower back) to
minimize lower back and leg pain, in the thoracic region (the mid-back) to
reduce mid-back and chest pain or in the cervical region (the neck area)
to reduce certain types of neck and upper extremity pain.
Epidural injections can be targeted to identify the source of the pain. This
is called a selective nerve block, steroid block or selective epidural. In
this instance, the block numbs the roots of specific nerves for a short period
of time. If you feel relief, it may indicate the source of pain. If you don’t,
it may mean that the pain is originating from a different location in your
spine.
